In the mid 1800s, some of the first settlers began to enter the region by the "Southern Route" that ran over the Cascades, through the Rogue Valley, and then north to the Willamette Valley. One family, the Stevens, was the first to stake a claim in the Springfield area in 1847. Patriarch William Stevens and three of his sons completed a home in early December of that year with the rest of the family soon following.

Other settlers included Elias Briggs, who would later run a ferry on the Willamette River and even later have a middle school named after him, Briggs Middle School. This school sits at the base of beautiful green hills while its track lies across from a historical home that radiates Springfield’s great heritage. But it was Captain Felix Scott, Sr. who settled the area between the McKenzie and Willamette rivers. In less than a decade, in 1854, the town began to grow with the first schoolhouse built near the corner of south 7th and B streets.
